This meteorite was found in Allende, Chihuahua, Mexico. It is a type of meteorite known as a carbonaceous chondrite and it has several extremely interesting qualities. It appears to be older than the solar system - over 4.5 billion years. In addition, meteorites of this type contain many of the same amino acids that are found in living tissue. Recently, microscopic diamonds were found in this type of meteorite. These diamonds are thought to have formed when carbon in the material was compressed by a nearby exploding supernova. This photomicrograph is part of a series of photographs documenting all of the various types of meteorites found on Earth, including some that are thought to be pieces of the planet Mars.
